“The Bear” had a bearish night indeed, fully dominating the comedy category in its first season, winning the top prize and three acting awards. And the chaotic, darkly humorous “Beef” was the other big victor, winning best limited series, with leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong becoming the first Asian Americans to win in their categories. Oliver tried to test the new system after winning best scripted variety show: “I’m not leaving without being played off by Anthony Anderson’s mom. You said maybe, if I win!”A BIG BEAR HUG, ER, KISSCould “The Bear” replicate its success from the Golden Globes? Yes, chef, with Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri winning for best actor and best supporting actress in a comedy, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach winning a supporting actor award.

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie pushed up sales for the iconic doll, Mattel execs say. Global gross billings in the quarter were up 14%, but this wasn't enough to offset poor performance in the first half of 2023. AdvertisementAdvertisementGreta Gerwig's "Barbie" blockbuster helped boost sales for the plastic doll following a poor performance in the first half of the year. North America made up around 58% of Barbie's total gross billings, and saw a much bigger rise — gross billings were up 26% to $349.9 million in the quarter. Global gross billings were down 6% in the year to September compared to the same period in 2022.

The fictional Ruth Handler jokes in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" about getting in trouble with the IRS. The real-life Handler was indicted for conspiracy and making false financial statements to the SEC. "I am Mattel," Handler, played by Rhea Perlman says in the movie. Under the settlement, around $30 million was paid to shareholders and the Handlers surrended two million Mattel shares. Handler wrote that she was "convinced" that the US Attorney's Office went after her "so aggressively" because of her gender.

Someone more cynical than Gerwig might have been less moved by Mattel’s corporate epiphany, 60 years into existence, that Barbie could sustain being a size 6, but cynicism is clearly not Gerwig’s way. The movie sidesteps whatever role Barbie might play in perpetuating a narrow, idealized femininity; instead it gives this particular Barbie a crash course in modern misogyny. After decades of fretting about girls’ wanting to be as perfect as Barbie, Gerwig serves up a Barbie struggling to be as resilient as us. This woman is played by the 91-year-old, Oscar-winning costume designer Ann Roth, a friend of Gerwig’s. If I don’t have that scene, I don’t know what it is or what I’ve done.”
